I opened Netflix at 10 PM to watch just the first episode of Bridgerton S4 Part 2. Forty minutes later I was three episodes in and the app had never once asked me if I wanted to stop.

Quick answer: Netflix Autoplay is a profile-level setting that automatically starts the next episode after a countdown. To turn it off: open Netflix, tap My Netflix, tap the hamburger menu, tap Manage Profiles, tap your profile, and toggle off Autoplay next episode. It’s filed under profile management — not in Settings or Playback — so almost no one finds it.

How it works

You sat down to watch one episode. The episode ends. That’s the natural stopping point: the moment you intended to use to decide whether to keep going. Netflix auto-plays the next episode before you reach it. The countdown starts immediately, the next episode loads, and the decision is made for you. That’s what Autoplay is. It’s designed to remove the pause before you can use it.

How to turn it off

The toggle isn’t in the app’s settings. It’s buried in your profile management.

  1. Open Netflix
  2. Tap My Netflix (bottom-right)
  3. Tap the hamburger menu (top-right)
  4. Tap Manage Profiles
  5. Tap your profile
  6. Toggle off Autoplay next episode

While you’re there, you’ll also see Autoplay previews, the trailers that auto-play while you’re browsing. That one’s worth turning off too.

Why it’s buried

It’s not in Settings. It’s not in Playback. It’s filed under your profile, in a menu designed for changing your avatar and display name. Nobody opens profile management looking for playback controls. Android has a system-level answer too: App Timers let you set a daily limit on any app.

The bigger picture

Streaming apps are designed to keep you watching. Autoplay, countdown timers, skipping credits: they remove every friction point between you and the next episode. The off switch exists, but it’s never where you’d expect.
