I put on the Grammy nominees playlist at 2 PM to work. At 4:30 I had two paragraphs. The looping video was running the whole time.
Quick answer: Spotify Canvas plays short looping video clips behind every song. For ADHD, the problem isn’t that Canvas is interesting. Motion is involuntary to track. Your visual cortex doesn’t check with you first. To turn it off: open Spotify, tap your profile picture (top-left), go to Settings and privacy → Content and display, toggle Canvas off. Five taps. Android’s Remove Animations setting does nothing here.
What’s happening
The video behind each song runs a four-second loop. You’re not watching it. But every loop, you look at the phone anyway. Your visual cortex tracks motion because that’s what it does — you don’t decide to look, you just do. Each look is an interrupt. Each interrupt resets the attention you were building toward whatever you were supposed to be doing.
The same interrupt costs more for an ADHD brain, and recovery takes longer. Four seconds between them is not enough time to recover before the next one.
Grammy season makes it worse because Canvas coverage runs on most popular tracks. Every song in the nominees playlist has a loop. This isn’t one interrupt every hour. It’s one every four seconds, continuously, for the entire session.
How to turn it off
- Open Spotify
- Tap your profile picture (top-left)
- Tap Settings and privacy
- Tap Content and display
- Toggle Canvas off
Why it’s buried
Canvas increases track shares by 145%. It’s filed under “Content and display”: a label that sounds like display preferences, not like something affecting your ability to sustain attention. It’s not in Accessibility. It’s not near the playback controls. Nothing in the path suggests it’s the source of two hours of fractured attention.
Android’s Remove Animations toggle doesn’t reach it. Spotify’s Canvas runs independently of the system animation setting.
The bigger picture
Canvas is one of three settings in TrueTo’s Spotify configuration for ADHD. The others are Autoplay (which removes your exit point when a playlist ends, same principle, different mechanism, covered in the YouTube Autoplay post) and Listening Activity. The full list across all apps is at /settings-for-adhd. Spotify also expanded Canvas to advertisers in 2024, so the same toggle now blocks promotional visuals too.
The Grammys were February 2. The loop is still going.
