The screen is too bright, so you go looking for the setting. The search is six taps through white menus at full brightness: the setting that fixes the screen is buried in the screen. By the time you find Extra Dim, you've spent two minutes staring at exactly the thing you were trying to dim.
And dark mode is only one of the levers. Android's Dark theme is a request, not a rule: apps keep their own theme toggles and some ignore the system entirely. The brightness slider stops above where you want it. Night Light is filed under Display, Extra Dim under Accessibility, Remove animations under Color and motion. Nothing about the screen is decided in one place.
What keeps the screen bright and busy by default
- The honor system — Android announces Dark theme; each app decides whether to follow it. YouTube, Chrome, and WhatsApp all keep their own toggle.
- The brightness floor — the slider stops before the screen is actually dim. Extra Dim is the setting below the slider.
- The blue-white cast — Night Light warms the light itself, separate from what color the pixels are drawn in.
- The motion — sliding transitions between screens, Spotify's looping Canvas videos, the next YouTube video starting on its own.

Android System

Android's system-wide dark color scheme. White backgrounds put out more light than anything else on screen; Dark theme swaps them for dark ones in every app that honors it. The catch is the honor system: apps can keep their own theme setting and ignore this one, which is what the per-app rows below are for.

The brightness slider has a floor, and in a dark room the floor is still bright. Extra Dim dims the screen below it, with its own intensity control. On some phones the toggle doesn't appear in any settings menu at all and only opens through a direct system link, which is how TrueTo reaches it.

Warms the screen's color temperature, cutting the blue-white cast. Dark theme changes what color the pixels are; Night Light changes the color of the light itself. They stack.

YouTube can follow the system Dark theme, but Appearance has three options and "Use device theme" isn't always the one selected. Setting it to Dark directly keeps the white background gone regardless of what the system says.
Chrome

Chrome's own interface follows this toggle; most websites still pick their own colors. A white page late at night usually isn't Chrome ignoring you, it's the site. Dark theme at least darkens the toolbar, tabs, and menus around it.

WhatsApp keeps its own theme setting. "System default" follows Android's Dark theme; if it was ever set to Light, it stays light no matter what the system says.
Counterintuitive — the setting isn't where its job suggests, or the obvious control isn't the real one.

Common questions
Why is there no single dark mode toggle for every app?
Android's Dark theme is an invitation, not an instruction. The system announces the theme; each app decides whether to follow it. YouTube, Chrome, and WhatsApp all keep their own theme settings, and any of them can sit on Light while the system is dark. That's why "turn on dark mode" turns into a per-app chore: there's no system-wide enforcement, only a default that apps may honor.
What's the difference between Dark theme, Night Light, and Extra Dim?
Three different levers. Dark theme changes what's drawn: dark backgrounds instead of white ones. Night Light changes the color of the light: warmer, less blue. Extra Dim changes how much light: it lowers brightness below the slider's floor. They stack, and none of them replaces the others.
The brightness slider is all the way down and the screen is still bright. Why?
The slider has a floor. Phones set a minimum brightness, and in a dark room that minimum is still a lot of light. Extra Dim is the setting below the slider: it dims the whole screen past the floor, with its own intensity control. Most people have never seen it because it isn't anywhere near the brightness slider.
Why are half of these settings in the Accessibility menu?
That's just where Android files them. Extra Dim and Remove animations sit under Accessibility; Night Light sits under Display; Dark theme under Display & touch. They're ordinary display settings; the menu name is the main reason nobody finds them. TrueTo doesn't care where a setting is filed. It navigates to each one the same way.
Does TrueTo change these settings for me?
