You turned off Autoplay in YouTube. Then you opened Facebook and a video in your feed started playing on its own, sound included. Then TikTok kept feeding you the next clip before you'd decided you were done with the last one. Then Spotify started a song you never chose, three minutes after your playlist ended.

Every video app, every streaming app, and every feed autoplays something by default: the next video, the next episode, a muted preview while you're just scrolling, a looping video clip behind a song. Each one lives in a different settings menu under a different name: Playback, Media, Data Saver, Data usage, sometimes buried inside profile management instead of Settings at all. Turning it off in one app never touches the others.

What plays on its own by default

  • The next thing in the queue — YouTube's Autoplay next video, Netflix's Autoplay next episode. Both start a countdown before you've decided to keep going.
  • Muted previews — YouTube's Muted playback in feeds, Netflix's Autoplay previews. Trailers and clips playing while you're just browsing.
  • Looping video — Spotify Canvas, a video clip behind the song that's playing, on whether you asked for it or not.
  • Whatever's next in the feed — TikTok and Reddit advance to the next clip as you scroll; X and Facebook do the same in the middle of your feed.

Turning off Autoplay in YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Reddit takes 18+ taps across four apps: four different menus, four different names. TrueTo does it in one.

YouTube

  • Autoplay next video A

    Starts the next video the moment the current one ends. Off restores the natural stopping point: the video ends, and nothing else starts. It's on the main Settings screen, not inside Digital Wellbeing.

    A separate toggle from Autoplay next video. This one plays muted previews of videos as you scroll the Home and Shorts feeds. Turning off the queue toggle above doesn't touch this one.

TikTok

  • counterintuitive: Data Saver A

    TikTok has no setting actually labeled "Autoplay." Data Saver is the closest thing: turned on, videos won't preload or autoplay over cellular, only on Wi-Fi. It doesn't stop the For You feed from advancing while you're scrolling it.

TikTok Lite

  • Data Saver A

    Same setting, same limitation, as TikTok's Data Saver above: it restricts autoplay to Wi-Fi rather than turning it off outright. TikTok Lite is a separate app with its own settings, so this is a separate toggle.

Facebook

  • counterintuitive: Autoplay A

    Filed under Media, next to video-quality controls, not anywhere near a Feed or Playback menu. Controls whether videos in your feed start playing the moment they scroll into view.

Reddit

  • Autoplay A

    Controls whether videos and GIFs start playing automatically as they scroll into view in your feed. It sits directly on the main Settings screen.

X (Twitter)

  • Video autoplay A

    Filed under Data usage, next to image-quality settings, not under a general playback or feed menu. Three options: Never, Wi-Fi Only, Always. Always is the default.

Spotify

  • Canvas C

    The looping video clip behind some songs on the Now Playing screen. This is a separate setting from the Autoplay below: turning one off doesn't touch the other, even though both get called "autoplay" in casual conversation.

  • Autoplay A Manual

    Keeps playing similar music once your queue or playlist ends. Not the same setting as Canvas above, and not yet in TrueTo's automated catalog: the path is accurate, you flip this one yourself.

Netflix

  • Autoplay next episode A Manual

    Starts the next episode in a series on a countdown as soon as one ends. It's filed under profile management, not Settings, not Playback: a menu built for changing your avatar and display name.

  • Autoplay previews P Manual

    Trailers that play automatically while you're browsing titles. Same screen as Autoplay next episode above, one row down.

Counterintuitive — the real switch isn't where the name suggests, or a second setting undoes the first.

Common questions

Can I turn off autoplay in every app at once?

Not with one universal switch. YouTube's Autoplay lives on the main Settings screen, TikTok folds the closest thing into Data Saver, Facebook buries it inside Media, and X calls the same idea "Video autoplay" under Data usage. Spotify even has two different settings that both get called autoplay in conversation: Canvas's looping video clips and the separate, unrelated queue-end Autoplay. TrueTo finds each one it automates: 8 settings across 7 apps: and applies the whole set in one tap. Netflix's Autoplay and Spotify's queue-end Autoplay aren't part of the automated set yet; the paths above are accurate, you flip those two yourself.

Why does autoplay come back on?

App updates are the usual cause. Autoplay toggles tend to live inside data-usage or media-quality menus, and those are exactly the screens an update touches when a company changes its default video quality or rolls out a new data-saving mode. Netflix's reset works differently: Autoplay is stored per profile, so a new profile or a freshly reinstalled app starts with Autoplay next episode back on by default. Worth a recheck after any major app update.
