Your Apps on the Morning Train

A Morning Train, a Family Group and a Long Thread

Some apps keep a motion switch of their own, apart from the one in the phone’s settings.1 This is one of those mornings, in Marcus’s seat on the train.

  • Reddit’s app has a Reduce motion switch of its own, for animated awards, parallax transitions and other motion effects.1
  • Telegram keeps separate switches for autoplay, animations and effects under Power Saving, and can turn them down by itself when the battery falls to a set level.2

Marcus checks his phone on the morning train

The carriage sways as Marcus opens Reddit. A month ago he turned on Remove animations in the phone’s settings, and the phone’s own screens stopped sliding. In Reddit, though, the awards on a post still play their little animations, and the feed still moves in layers as he scrolls.

At the next stop he switches to Telegram, where the family group has been busy since six. The colored background behind the messages shifts each time a new one arrives. Marcus reads back through the morning while the train waits at a red signal, and nobody in the carriage looks up.

At his desk, with a coffee and ten minutes before his first meeting, Marcus opens Reddit to finish the long thread he started on the train. The awards still play beside the comments, and the page still moves in layers as he scrolls. He reads to the last reply, sets the phone beside the keyboard and opens his calendar.

By ten to nine

Marcus had taken Remove animations for a switch that reached into every app. He had no idea Reddit and Telegram each kept one of their own, Reddit’s in Media & animations and Telegram’s in Power Saving.

Reduce motion

In Reddit, under Settings and then Media & animations, Marcus can turn on Reduce motion himself.1 In Telegram, under Settings and then Power Saving, he can turn off Animations in Chats, one of several switches there for animations and effects.2
