I muted my group chat during last year’s Oscars and missed a message that apparently explained half the show. Every time a notification buzzed, I looked down, read the message, tried to think of a reply, looked back at the TV, and realized I’d lost track of who was presenting. So I muted everything. Then I missed the one text that actually mattered.
Quick answer: Android Focus Mode is a setting that pauses specific apps on demand or on a schedule, holding their notifications until the mode ends. To set it up: open Settings, tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, tap Focus mode, select the apps to pause, then tap Set a schedule to automate it. It’s filed under Digital Wellbeing, a menu most people open once during phone setup and never return to.
Your phone can pause specific apps
Android has a feature called Focus Mode. You pick the apps you want to pause — messaging, social media, whatever’s buzzing — and everything else still works. You can set it on a schedule, so it turns on and off automatically.
How to set it up
- Open Settings
- Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls
- Tap Focus mode
- Select the apps you want to pause (Messages, Instagram, X, etc.)
- Tap Set a schedule to have it turn on and off automatically
Set it for 7 PM to midnight and you’re covered for the whole ceremony. The paused apps hold your notifications. They all arrive when Focus Mode ends, so you don’t miss anything.
Why you’ve never seen it
It’s in Digital Wellbeing, a menu most people have never opened. Google built an entire initiative around the idea that your phone should help you disconnect. The tools are good. App Timers set daily limits per app. Focus Mode pauses apps on a schedule. They’re just filed under a name that sounds like a wellness lecture.
Do Not Disturb silences everything. Focus Mode lets you pick exactly which apps go quiet. That distinction matters, but nobody discovers it by accident.
The bigger picture
The real problem isn’t the group chat. It’s that every buzz costs you more than the two seconds it takes to glance at the screen. You lose your place, you lose the thread of what you were watching, and getting back takes longer than the interruption itself. Your phone can pause the noise without going dark entirely. The setting is just buried in a menu you’ve meant to explore and never have. That’s why we built TrueTo. One tap, it’s done.
I set Focus Mode for the first time during the Super Bowl. Paused Messages and Instagram, left everything else running. Watched the whole game without checking my phone once. Read the group chat afterward. Didn’t miss a thing.
