A New Horror Film, a Stranger’s Post and a Bucket of Popcorn

A film’s ending can turn up in a comment, a post or a video, from someone who has already seen it. This is one of those weekends, in Yuki’s apartment.

  • Instagram’s Hidden Words can hide comments and message requests that contain words, phrases or emojis from a list of your own.1
  • X can mute words, phrases and hashtags as well as accounts, and keep posts that contain them out of the Home timeline, notifications or both.2
  • TikTok can filter videos whose descriptions or stickers contain a chosen word or hashtag out of the For You and Following feeds.3

The new film in a horror series Yuki has seen from the start opens on Friday. Waiting for the bus home that evening, she posts a photo of her ticket for Saturday on Instagram. The first comment under it comes from someone she met once at a party, and it names the killer.

Later she reads X on the sofa, the way she does most nights. Between a recipe and a meme is a post from someone she does not follow, quoting the twist. She closes the app, but she has already read it.

On Saturday she goes anyway, with a bucket of popcorn and a seat near the front. While the adverts play she opens TikTok, and the second video in her feed is a stranger reacting to the last scene. The lights go down, and Yuki spends the film waiting for a moment she has already seen.

By Saturday night

Yuki had taken a stranger’s spoiler for part of opening weekend. She had no idea Instagram, X and TikTok each kept a list of words to hide, Instagram’s under Settings and activity, X’s behind Mute and block and TikTok’s under Content preferences.

With the film’s name in Filter video keywords in TikTok, videos with it in their descriptions would have stayed out of her feed, and each list would have stayed hers to clear, in its own app.

Muted words

In Instagram, under Settings and activity, Yuki can turn on Hidden Words herself and add words of her own.1 In X, under Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Mute and block, she can set Muted words, one word or phrase at a time.2 In TikTok, under Settings and privacy and then Content preferences, she can add words to Filter video keywords.3
