What most guides miss
The claim that gets repeated is that anyone who can message you can see your activity status. That is a wider audience than the setting has. It goes to mutual followers, meaning the two of you follow each other, which on most accounts is a much shorter list than the inbox. The two ideas are not even neighbours in TikTok's own controls: messaging is governed by two separate controls, Potential connections and Others on TikTok, each of which is set to either Requests or Don't receive. There is no Friends value and no No one value to pick.
The switch also costs something. Turning Activity status off hides the signal in both directions, so you stop seeing mutual followers' green dots along with them seeing yours. Worth knowing before you flip a setting that was probably already off.
Profile views is the other half of the query, and it is two-directional in a different way. While it is on, people can see that you viewed their profile and you can see who viewed yours, one exchange rather than two settings. TikTok ships this one off as well, and offers it only to accounts 16 and over with fewer than 5,000 followers.
Defaults being in your favour on these two does not make the whole screen quiet.
