WhatsApp Visibility Settings

Hide your online status on WhatsApp. Then hide it again.

Last Seen and online status are two separate controls sitting on the same screen. Turning off Last Seen hides the timestamp and leaves the live Online label exactly where it was. Both paths are below: Last Seen is in TrueTo's verified catalog, and the online status control underneath it is one you set yourself.

You set Last Seen to Nobody in WhatsApp. Someone messaged an hour later asking why you were online.

The setting worked. It covers Last Seen, which is the last time you opened WhatsApp, and it covers nothing else. The live Online label is a second control, sitting one line below the first on the same screen, called Who can see when I'm online. Hiding the timestamp leaves it running.

Both paths are below. The second one is the one people go their whole time on WhatsApp without finding.

You choose what to turn off. TrueTo shows each setting with an explanation, and every automated setting is individually reversible.

What's in this profile

1 setting across 1 app that TrueTo is built to configure, with one-tap automation rolling out. Another 1 is listed below and marked Manual: the path is accurate, but it isn't part of the automated profile yet, so you apply it yourself.

WhatsApp

  • Last Seen

Settings path:Settings → Privacy → Last Seen and Online

Shows the last time you opened WhatsApp. People use it to calculate how long you have been ignoring them. "Nobody" hides it completely; "My Contacts" limits it to people saved in your phone. It is the first of two controls on that screen and it does not govern the second. This is the row in TrueTo's verified catalog.

  • counterintuitive: Online status Manual

Settings path:Settings → Privacy → Last Seen and Online → Who can see when I'm online

Separate from Last Seen. Even with Last Seen hidden, your online status can still show "Online" in real time. WhatsApp shipped this toggle in August 2022 and most people still do not know it exists. "Same as Last Seen" points it at the audience you chose one line above. No check in TrueTo's catalog reaches it, so set this one while the screen is already open.

Counterintuitive — feels harmless to leave on; the default benefits the platform, not you.

Manual Not yet in TrueTo's supported catalog. The path above is accurate; you make the change yourself.

What most guides miss

The screen is called Last Seen and Online and it holds two controls, not one. That name is doing a lot of quiet work: it reads like a single subject, so the choice you make at the top of it feels like the answer for the whole screen. It is the answer for the first half. Who can see when I'm online is a separate question sitting underneath, with its own audience, waiting to be answered separately.

The two settings are also different in kind. Last Seen is a timestamp about the past, and people read it to work out how long you have been ignoring them. Online status is the present tense: it says you are in the app right now. Hide only the first and the one reporting on this exact moment is the one still showing.

WhatsApp shipped the online status control in August 2022, and most people still do not know it exists. That is the whole mechanism behind "I turned it off and it did not work". Nothing failed to stick and nothing reset overnight. The setting that was changed was never the setting doing the broadcasting.

Read receipts are a third thing again, on a different row of the same Privacy menu at Settings → Privacy → Read Receipts. They govern the blue checkmarks, not whether you appear online, and they are not a clean opt-out either: group chats always send read receipts, and the play receipt on a voice note cannot be switched off. Turning them off is worth doing and it does not hide you.

Other apps put the same signal in their own menus under their own names, which is why hiding it once never holds. The visibility settings page lists each one with its verified path.

Common questions

How do I hide my online status on WhatsApp on Android?

It takes two settings on one screen. Open WhatsApp Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online, and set Last Seen to Nobody or My Contacts. On that same screen, open "Who can see when I'm online" and set it to Same as Last Seen. Last Seen covers the timestamp showing when you were last in the app; the second control covers the live Online label, and setting the first one does not change the second.

Why do people still see me online after I turned off Last Seen on WhatsApp?

Because Last Seen and online status are two different settings. Last Seen is the timestamp showing when you last opened WhatsApp, at Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online. Your online status is a separate control on that same screen, called "Who can see when I'm online", and with Last Seen hidden it can still show Online in real time.

What is the difference between Last Seen and online status on WhatsApp?

Last Seen reports the past: the last time you opened WhatsApp. Online status reports the present, showing Online while you are in the app. They are set separately. Last Seen is at Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online, with the choices including Nobody, which hides it completely, and My Contacts, which limits it to people saved in your phone. Online status is at "Who can see when I'm online" on that same screen.

Where is the "Who can see when I'm online" setting on WhatsApp?

On the Last Seen and Online screen, one level below Last Seen itself: WhatsApp Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online, then "Who can see when I'm online". WhatsApp shipped this control in August 2022, and most people still do not know it exists, which is why hiding Last Seen is so often reported as not having worked.

Does turning off read receipts hide my online status on WhatsApp?

No. Read Receipts is its own toggle, at WhatsApp Settings, then Privacy, then Read Receipts, and it governs the blue checkmarks rather than whether you appear online. Two things survive turning it off: group chats always send read receipts, and the play receipt on a voice note cannot be switched off. Your online status is governed by "Who can see when I'm online", at Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online.

What does "Same as Last Seen" mean on WhatsApp?

It is the value for the online status control at Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online, then "Who can see when I'm online". Choosing it points your online status at the same audience you picked for Last Seen, so the live Online label follows the choice you already made instead of running on its own.

Can TrueTo hide my WhatsApp Last Seen and online status?

Last Seen is in TrueTo's verified catalog. The online status sub-setting, "Who can see when I'm online", is not, so you set that one yourself at WhatsApp Settings, then Privacy, then Last Seen and Online. Configuring Android app settings is what TrueTo is built for, and it arrives one setting at a time.

TrueTo is built to configure 1 setting here, with one-tap automation rolling out. Every setting stays individually reversible.
